Why use an essay coach?

With a deep understanding of the admissions process and how admissions officers read applications, an essay consultant can help applicants make choices about which messages best reveal a student’s values, judgement, and experience. The consultant can provide feedback on how to structure those messages for power and clarity. Importantly, an essay consultant can keep an applicant on task so that parents don’t have to.

Is hiring an essay consultant very expensive?

We as parents make enormous sacrifices to secure advantages for our children. For most people, every aspect of a university education is expensive, tuition, housing, transportation, books, application fees, testing, tutors, and counselors. We feel that hiring an essay consultant is a worthwhile cost as part of the overall investment in higher education. In comparison to well-known companies that provide essay help, our prices are highly competitive. A package for the University of California application starts at $1,800.

Does the University of California use the Common App?

No. The University of California has one application for all nine of its undergraduate campuses that requires its own set of Personal Insight Questions. Applicants are given 8 prompts and choose 4 of them to answer in no more than 350 words each.

What makes a college essay effective?

An effective college essay tells a clear, authentic, personal story that reveals a student’s values, experience and unique perspective. It communicates to the admissions officers why the student would be a valuable addition to the college community. It also avoids overly clever stylistic devices that negatively impact clarity and authenticity.

Can I write an effective college essay if I haven’t overcome adversity?

A student can write about any topic as long as the message reveals important values. Overcoming difficulty is just one aspect of personal experience. There are lots of other reasons why an applicant would make a good addition to an incoming freshman class.

Will you rewrite a student’s essay to make it sound better?

No. All writing is done by the student. We will notice areas that should improve and coach ways to write more effectively. We help with organization, clarity, creativity, focus, and self-expression. We inspire a student to write expressively, but always in that teenager’s authentic voice.
